This application must be filed every year a student is in college. The deadline for priority consideration for Michigan (to be eligible for the Michigan Competitive Scholarship and the Michigan Tuition Grant) is July 1st, 2025, but you can still file any time after December 1st, 2024.
To complete the FAFSA, you will need:
- Your Social Security Number
- Your Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
- Your 2023 federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned. (Note: You may be able to transfer your federal tax return information into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.)
- Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
- Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
- A FSA ID to sign electronically (Note: Students and parents must create an FSA ID. If the parent has already created an FSA ID (maybe if you had an older sibling go to college) they will need to login with the same information. You can only have one FSA ID in your lifetime. See this website to find who your contributor is: Who counts as a parent on the FAFSA form? | Federal Student Aid)
*If you are a dependent student, then you will also need most of the above information for your parent(s).
Reminders:
- Try to complete your FAFSA as early as possible in order to maximize your financial aid. However, do not file before December 1st or your information will be incorrect
- State aid is awarded based on the school listed first on your FAFSA
